Westermill Cottage Information [Edits in blue]

Westermill is a family-run farm of 500 acres located in the heart of Exmoor National Park. It is home to a herd of Pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle and Cheviot sheep. The Edwards family have farmed here since 1938. We are located within the International Dark Sky Reserve – prime location for star-gazing on a clear night.

We have approximately 350 breeding sheep, mainly South Country Cheviot, as well as Suffolks, Teeswaters and Texies. Lambing occurs around the Easter period where you will see baby lambs being born. Additional to the sheep, we also have approximately 90 Aberdeen Angus suckler cows. Calving occurs around the Easter period and a selection of the stock is sold in November to Waitrose.

Our farm is also home to pigs (every now and again) which we use as meat in our farm shop (sausages, bacon and burgers). The farmyard is often filled with chickens and geese throughout the year, as well as our 4 sheep dogs (Chisel, Drillbit, Jasper and Clipper).

The Shippon Shop: Located in the barn opposite the farmhouse. Open 9-10am and 6-7pm. Basic essentials (bread, milk, eggs, cheese, bacon) are all sold in the shop. Almost all meat sold in the shop is produce from the farm – perfect for your evening BBQs.

Wood Burner: If you require assistance in lighting the wood burner please ask at the farmhouse. More wood can be collected from the log box situated in the small shed by the wheelie bin. There is a wheelbarrow by the wood box, please return after use. Please do not empty the ashes as we do this at the end of your stay. Please do not light the burner on the day of departure.

Wood Burner: If you require assistance – or just a refresher – in lighting the wood burner please do not hesitate to ask us. For a modest fee [£5] more wood can be collected from the log store situated in the barn across from the farmhouse. Please do not empty the ashes, we will do this at the end of your stay. Finally, please do not light the wood burner on the day of departure.

BBQs: Please do not kill or blacken any grass from the use of a BBQ.

Rubbish: Please put your rubbish in the large wheelie bin situated in the small shed opposite Holly cottage. There are recycling bins for glass, cans, plastic and paper.

Animals: Here at Westermill we have a wide variety of animals – geese, chickens, dogs, cats, pigs, sheep and cows. They all get along with one another like a big happy family – please respect each animal ensure that their safety remains paramount. Dogs must not be allowed to roam freely around the fields or farm. All dogs must be kept on leads if you are walking around the farm – for safety do not take them nears cows and calves. Please clean up after your pets (inside and out). Douglas wood (at the end of the 4th camping field) is for off-the-lead exercise only. Please ask if you need directions.

Roof Windows: Please ensure when windows are open they are not tilting back into the room – when it rains the water will run into the cottage! If you are going out, please ensure that they are closed.

Wifi: This is a free service available within the cottage paddock or in the vicinity of the farmhouse. Please use it sparingly.

Departure: The cottage MUST be left clean and tidy upon departure. Additional fees may apply for excessive cleaning requirements. Please place “BED NOT USED” signs on any unused beds. Departure time is 10am unless agreed prior to arrival.
